Gardening
A big question many people ask is Why Organic?
....For your personal health. As long as you are
growing organic you guarantee your own nutritional value within the food you eat
from your own garden. Commercially grown produce is
all but devoid of nutrients. This is one probable reason as to why we hear and
read propaganda stating, that various produce (such as lettuce) offers little to
no food value. Commercially grown often does not, because of the soil it is
grown in and the sprays they are treated with.
"Organic gardening works with natural systems to grow healthy gardens,
nutritious great tasting food, and beautiful flowers, without subjecting us or
our families to dangerous agricultural chemicals and pesticides".
"Organically grown foods may seem more expensive,
but mere retail prices are deceptive because conventionally raised and priced
foods represent only a fraction of the true cost. Current food prices do not
reflect the costs of federal subsidies to conventional agriculture, the cost of
contaminated drinking water, the cost of loss of wildlife habitat and topsoil,
or the cost disposal and cleanup of hazardous waste generated by the
manufacturing of pesticides. Consumers can pay now, or pay later. Buying organic
food and products now is a direct investment in a more sustainable environment".

....Reduce potential health risks. Many EPA-approved pesticides were
registered long before extensive research linked these chemicals to cancer and
other diseases. Now, the EPA considers 60 percent of all herbicides, 90 percent
of all fungicides and 30 percent of all insecticides as potentially
cancer-causing. A 1987 National Academy of Sciences report estimated that
pesticides might cause an extra 1.4 million cancer cases among Americans over
their lifetimes. In California, five of the top nine pesticides used on cotton
are cancer causing- chemicals, according to Pesticide Action Network, North
America. ―The Organic Trade Association's top 10 reasons for

....For the health of your garden. "Organic
gardening encourages diverse plantings, works with crops that promote beneficial
insects, and recycles nutrients with earthworms, composts and green manures. It
strives to work in harmony with natural systems using composts, crop rotations,
rock dust, seaweeds and microbes to improve soils, promoting healthy plant
growth and maximum food production".

What makes a seed organic?
"Certified organically grown seeds are harvested from
plants raised on certified organic farms without the use of synthetic chemicals,
pesticides, or herbicides. No chemical fungicides are applied to the seed before
packing. Generated and tested under organic conditions, organic seeds are a
fundamental first step in sustainable organic agriculture".
"Seeds of Change seeds are certified organic in
accordance with the National Organic Standard by Oregon Tilth, one of the oldest
and most respected certification agencies in the United States.
